Learning and Teaching Sustainability

Some of our favorite sustainable snacks

As part of our mission to learn and teach sustainability, we are always looking for new food brands that are "sustainable". We want to buy from companies that care about people and the planet as much as they care about profits.

We have created some sustainability rating criteria that we use as a guide when we vet out sustainable food brands. In the spirit of transparency, below we have provided the criteria that we use to evaluate sustainable food.

Note that one challenge with researching sustainability of companies is the lack of publicly available information. We do our best with the information available to us. If you have more information to help any of our reviews be more accurate, please contact us. We want to be as fair as possible. Every company we review is in some way sustainable. Our goal is to point out what they are doing right.

Sustainability Rating Criteria

  1. Luxury Good - Too expensive for 90% of people to afford
  2. Expensive - Expensive but attainable when splurging
  3. Above Average - A little more expensive than competitors
  4. Average - Fairly priced and matches competition
  5. Great Value - Beats out competition and affordable to everyone

Coconut Bliss

Product Name: Coconut Bliss

Product Description: Why Bliss? “When people ask us how we came up with Luna & Larry’s Coconut Bliss we’d like to say that we are entrepreneurial geniuses, but the truth is much humbler. We just wanted a dairy-free ice cream that tasted as good as it made us feel.” – Larry Kaplowitz, Cofounder Inspired by the many uses of coconut milk in other cuisines, Luna and Larry decided to try it as a base for ice cream. Working with a simple, hand-crank ice cream maker, they came up with the perfect recipe: organic coconut milk sweetened with agave. They began to play with unique flavor combinations, sharing their new creations with friends and building a dedicated following. Their vision for a great tasting dairy-free, gluten-free ice cream, made with the highest quality organic ingredients, is our daily inspiration.

They go as far as creating and making available to the public an annual sustainability report. You can find that at their website. Or by clicking here
